Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) Vision
Vision
The vision for our Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) curriculum is to enable our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. We want to develop children’s capacity to learn, their resilience, their emotional well-being and mental health and thereby enhance their life chances. PSHE education plays a fundamental role in our children’s Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development and provides opportunities for the promotion of British Values. We intend for our children to understand rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse, democratic society. We want our pupils to understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle; be aware of how to stay safe; make informed choices regarding personal and social issues; and be able to develop good, positive relationships within school and beyond. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth and confidence by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
Coverage
Our PSHE curriculum follows the Jigsaw scheme of learning. Jigsaw is a universal whole-school curriculum that not only provides teachers with detailed lesson plans and resources to deliver PSHE lessons effectively, it also includes whole-school opportunities e.g. assemblies, end-of-Puzzle displays, celebrations, music and songs to reinforce the curriculum work and enhance the positive ethos of the whole school community.
The scheme ensures progression via its spiral design: there are 6 Puzzles (units) taught each year and every class covers the same Puzzle at the same time. Each Puzzle has 6 pieces (lessons) to enable weekly delivery of the content.
Jigsaw provides a comprehensive PSHE Programme which covers all the requirements of the government guidance and outcomes for Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), and more. The Relationships and Healthy Me Puzzles cover most of the aspects in the guidance but these are enhanced, revisited and foundations built throughout the Jigsaw Programme. Jigsaw’s philosophy starts by building positive self-image, a sense of identity and a healthy relationship with self, and from that starting point helps children grow healthy relationships with others. Health Education in Jigsaw embraces not only physical health but has a strong focus on mental health and emotional literacy throughout, and empowers children to be aware of their own thoughts and feelings and know how to manage and regulate these e.g. using Calm Me (mindfulness techniques).
As well as delivering PSHE through timetabled lessons, aspects of the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) and emotional literacy elements of the curriculum often occur during other times of the school day (such as circle times to discuss social issues at playtime).
Our curriculum - via lessons, collective worships and other activities – also allows children to demonstrate the British Values: Democracy; The Rule of Law; Individual Liberty; Mutual Respect; and Tolerance of those with different Faiths and Beliefs. For example, House Captains, School Council and Church Council representatives are elected to lead groups and represent children’s voice across a number of school matters.
We also invite visitors to support the implementation of some aspects of the curriculum, including the NSPCC and professionals in the fields of oral health, fire safety and road safety.

Evidence
By teaching pupils to stay safe and by building self-esteem, resilience, empathy and an understanding of themselves and others, PSHE is able to tackle barriers to learning and raise aspirations. The skills and attributes developed through our PSHE education will ensure that our children become the healthy, independent and responsible members of society that our curriculum intends them to be.
Children evidence some of their learning and reflections in their ‘Jigsaw Journals’; however, many aspects of the curriculum are discussion based and therefore PSHE is assessed by teacher judgement. On a termly basis, outcomes based on the objectives covered are recorded by teachers on our online assessment system.
