Physical Education (PE) Vision
Vision
At Bemerton St John, we aim to develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and capabilities necessary for the mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing of our children now, and in the future.
We believe that physical education is not only an important part of leading a healthier lifestyle but that it also teaches self-discipline through hard work, resilience and a determination that anything can be achieved when you put your mind to it.
We also encourage children to cooperate and communicate as part of a team, embedding values such as confidence, fairness and respect.
Coverage
Children at Bemerton St John participate in high quality PE and sporting activities for two hours per week. These lessons are taken either by the class teacher or by qualified sports coaches. For lessons run by the coaches, the teacher works alongside them, listening and learning in order to gather ideas for future sessions.
Our PE lessons include a variety of sports that ensure all children have the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills outlined in the National Curriculum and are provided with the chance to be challenged in order to progress their learning further. Our lessons encourage an appreciation of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as our own and, wherever possible, we aim to make cross-curricular links with subjects such as Maths, English and Science.
As well as PE lessons during school time, we ensure children have the opportunity to engage in extra-curricular activities after school and competitive sporting events.
In order to provide high-quality teaching for our children, the teachers have the chance to work with various outside agencies to support CPD, including Dance and Gymnastics.
Below is an overview of what is covered in each term for every year group.
Evidence
Through high quality teaching, we hope to improve not only the fitness of all of the children in our school, but also their mental, emotional and social wellbeing. We seek to ensure that our attainment is in line with or exceeds age-related expectations for their year group.
We hope that through motivation, encouragement and self-discipline, children are able to use all the knowledge and skills that they have been taught in an independent and effective way in order to lead a happy and healthy life.
At Bemerton St John, we are incredibly proud of our young sports people. We pride ourselves on teaching skills alongside notions of fair-play.
In this space we will be celebrating the children's progress in P.E. and their achievements in external tournaments.
